"Do you smell something?"
"Yeah, it smells like wood burning?"
We jumped out of our seats and ran around the house looking for the source of the smell.
As we approach Jesse’s bedroom we hear a popping and crackling, like you would hear at a campfire.
From the ceiling in his closet we see the flames flicking through the cracks in the crawlspace.
"HOLY SHIT" we all scream in near unison.
After a few seconds of looking for a fire extinguisher we realize the entire roof is on fire.
We run back into the studio and start yanking cords from all the equipment.
Brand new iMac, Nord Stage 2, Hard Drives, etc.
As we are carrying the gear out I hear a rushing sound.
The sound of the flames is actually loud enough to drown out any thing else.
It was growing. Louder by the second. The sound of the flames splitting wood. Air being released and hissing in their escape.
I put down the keyboard and I look up to see Jesse on the phone with the Fire Dept.
He grabs my sleeve and says “Don’t go back in!”
"I’ll be quick!" I reply.
As I head back into the house thick black smoke is pouring in through the ceiling.
I am crouching as low as I can and I make it into the room I was staying.
I manage find my backpack and duffle and turn around to flames coming out of Jesse’s room
The heat is overwhelming. Like opening an oven door.
I crawl out of the front door and turn around to see 20ft. tall flames erupt from the roof.
The flames are so big that the houses next door catch on fire.
Seconds later the Fire Dept. comes and without any hesitation, rush through the front door.
As they kick it down, flames blow past them.
Jesse says to me “take some pictures man”
"Really?" I thought it might be rude to chronicle my good friend losing everything he owns.
"It’s not like we can do anything but watch now. And besides, I want to remember this." He replies without breaking his line of sight with the fire.
I reluctantly take out my camera.
This is what we saw.
Still a littttle bit emotional about this. But, like all twisted creative types, I’m glad there are good pics.
